Lead Generation

Your Long URL May Be Costing You the Next Sale

Aug 09, 2022

As a speaker, making your offer with a long hard-to-read URL may be why you aren't getting the results you hoped for.

Does it matter where your leads are coming from? It should! Without that information, you have no idea what works and what doesn’t work.

When my clients are preparing for a speaking or sponsoring gig one of the key pieces is their lead generation. What will they be offering and how will they make the offer?

Simple you say. Not so simple as we’re getting back to in-person events and speaking on an audio-only stage such as a podcast.

Why your link is important

Whether your presentation is video or audio, a level of professionalism is seen in your mechanics. It's in how and where you instruct your audience to take you up on your offer. It’s in how clean and easy to read your links are.

You can give a great presentation but if your offer isn’t clear and easy to remember, you’re losing leads.

When speaking online in a Zoom room and instructing the audience to click the link in the chat it’ll work. But what if someone’s taking notes, like I do, and wants to write the link down for later? Something such as

https://christine-rothdeutsch.aweb.page/p/1f45ec7a-1bb4-4de8-adf3-e1b683bb0167 can't be captured. Sure the listener can save a Zoom chat and go back to it but I know that if I’m writing notes, I don’t want to go back and find it.

When you’re recording a podcast episode and links can’t be “dropped” in a chat, what do you do? Hope that the link in the show notes is clicked. Hope is not a strategy.

How you can create clean, easy to say and read links

You can purchase a domain specific to what you’re offering and redirect it to your “ugly” link. This is a domain that is only used as a redirect for one offer. No hosting or email is

needed for this method.

The second method is to purchase a domain that is only used for redirecting along with a redirect/link shortener tool. The redirect tool enables you to create many different

redirects for the same offer and tracks each one.

If your offer changes that’s ok. Anyone with the original link you shared is directed to the new offer.

Recommended tool

Rebrandly is a link management platform to brand, track and share short

URLs using a custom domain name. With Rebrandly you can create multiple

redirect links for the same offer. This is handy when you use analytics.

You can see which events generate the most responses over time.

An example is:

Before: https://videocast-workshop.christinerothdeutsch.com/

After: https://christineroth.com/techworkshop

The second link is simple to say and the listener will be more apt to remember it.

Added benefits of Rebrandly

Another place you can use your branded short link is on social media and in emails.

Email marketing service providers look upon branded links as valid. Your deliverability rate will be higher with branded links.

Social media posts are another place to be using URL redirects/shorteners. Create a different link for each site and you’ll know which is working better.

There’re numerous URL redirect tools Rebrandly is the one I’ve been using for the last few months. It’s a free redirect tool that every online marketer and speaker will benefit from using.
